Locked out!

Addison and I had a very unique experience this week. Shayna left a day early for a trip with her dad and fam and Addison and I were here at the house alone ... it was 5:15 on Thursday and I was making Orange Marmalade Beef Filet Mignon with Corn on the cob and potatoes. The corn and filets needed to be grilled, so I head out back to light the grill and get started. Addison and I had a short interaction at the door because she wanted to "go outside with you" ... now, when Addison goes outside a series of playtime begins. First she wants bubbles...then she wants to bounce (on the trampoline) ... then she decides it is time to go down the slide, and after about a hundred times up the ladder and down the slide, she decides it is time to swing. Ever since she learned how to swing "like a big girl" (ie: not in the baby swing) she pretty much doesn't want out of the swing once she is in it (unless it is to slide or bounce again). Sooo...in an effort to speed dinner along and get it cooking, I quickly explained to her that mommy would be right back - just going to light the grill and then I will be back inside with her. She wasn't real happy about it, but she complied with my request and stayed at the door inside the house.

I rushed outside, lit the grill...closed the lid to the grill and then heard a familiar, yet unfamiliar click!
"Uhhh..please tell me that is not what I think it was!" I reached for the back door and that topsy turvy feeling in my tummy got stronger. Addison had managed to LOCK the door...and I was outside with no keys and all other doors and windows in the house locked tight!

A mild panic hit me when I realized what this meant...but knowing there are options, I proceeded to think through those while playing peek-a-boo with Addison through the door (I certainly didn't want HER to panic)!
Fortunately, I had my cell phone in my back pocket and the blinds on the door were open. While watching her, I called my next door neighbor who has a spare key. He was only ten minutes or so away ... hallelujah!

While we waited we played peek-a-boo and I tried desperately to get her to unlock the door ... she had no clue what I was trying to get her to do! It felt like a really long ten minutes once Addison moved away from the door angry that she couldn't get out and I wasn't coming in. She had a nice little temper tantrum in the front room and then decided it was playtime in the laundry room (a location that is not visible from the back door!) I was fairly confident that there wasn't anything she could harm herself with and at this point my neighbor was only a few minutes away...so I waited and called Steve while I waited. We concluded that if I thought she was in trouble I would just break a window and come on in.

Fortunately, this was not necessary...Bill arrived rather quickly and used the key to let himself in and then let me in! Ahhh...much better. :) I guess that is the last time I will walk outside and leave her inside unless I have a key on me! Had it been earlier in the day, I would have been breaking a window since Steve and Bill both work about 30 minutes away!

All in all - this experience was one to laugh about once it was resolved. Who'da thunk my two year old would lock me out of the house!
