Day #3 - Sunday

Keely, John and Josh *John's son who joined us for the day post hike*

We woke up this morning...Day #3 in San Diego preparing for a hike in Torrey Pines.
Shayna and I dressed accordingly and were picked up by Keely and John who came bearing Bagels and OJ. Yummo!

While hiking is not necessarily my thing (man, I really need to get in better shape) I did enjoy this time and enjoyed the views. This is obviously a very popular spot cause it was uber busy for a hiking area. We didn't get to do all that we had intended to do on this hike - had a little change in plans - but we had a great time while we were there and could tell that there were a lot of really great viewing spots that we will just have to go see next time we go there.

From Torrey Pines we went to Old Town ..

this was a really awesome little area. It felt a lot like being in Mexico with great little Mexican restaurants and shops. It must have been one of the first areas populated around the area cause it is home to the first school! That was kinda neat to see. The area was full of "old" buildings, homes, and even the famous Whaley House (a supposedly haunted house...though I wasn't really buying that to be honest.)

After seeing Old Town and having lunch at the Old Town Mexican Cafe (and doing a little shopping in the area) we went to see the Point Loma Naval Base and cemetery.

This was truly an exceptional area. Sad to see grave after grave of soldiers...many were so very very young.
I did get a bit of a giggle at one point when I noticed that women have been buried with their husbands at this location ...

normally this would not be comical except that the graves were marked so simply on the back of the soldiers grave ....

I guess nothing else need be said about the women behind the men. ;)

The views of the bay from this area were really exceptional as well as the cool factor of seeing the "super secret spy space" that is our naval base in San Diego. There were several submarines docked and poking up out of the water. This was just a neat area to see in general.

From there we went to see the Cabrillo Lighthouse museum and memorial

This was the first lighthouse in San Diego (I think that's right anyway). They ended up having to build a new one because ships were not seeing it until it was too late (eep!}) Their old unused lighthouse is our gain though cause it gives us the opportunity to tour it and see what a lightouse is like inside. I was not even prepared for that. It was such a very small awkward space, and yet, people actually lived here and worked here. It was neat to get a glimpse of what life was like for them and see the inside of a lighthouse and it's grounds.

*Looking down at Shayna from the top of the stairs*
The views were, as expected, AMAZING!

Finally, we wrapped up the day by driving around on Shelter Island where lots of really cool boats and yachts are docked. From here we went back to our hotel ... rested for an hour or so and then Shayna and I headed out on our own again. We decided to go back to the Gaslamp District and do more shopping in that area as well as grab a bite to eat while we were there. We had the BESTEST garlic chicken pizza I have ever had at Sammy's out on the patio while people watching! Rawk on! What a perfect end to an incredibly awesome day!
