Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip
Did you ever see this show when it was on? Apparently it aired from Sept. '06 - June '07, not that I ever heard of it during that time.
We subscribe to Netflix and one of the DVD's I watched recently had the pilot for this show on it as an extra. I almost ignored it and sent the DVD back in after watching my show...but I was bored, so I watched it. I actually really liked it!
The series is a fictional show about a late night comedy sketch program called "Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip" Matt Albie (Matthew Perry) and Danny Trip (Bradley Whitford) are the head writer/co-executive producer and Executive producer respectively. The show also stars Amanda Peet as the President of the network and several other artists whom I don't know, but am enjoying.
The quick paced banter and the "behind the scenes" type action of producing a late night comedy show (think Saturday Night Live) is a blast for me to watch. It makes me wish I had followed my dream of becoming an actress and moved to LA or NYC when I was young! What fun/sometimes stressful jobs these folks have!
As with any television show it has its share of office romance and breakups. But this one is unique from most shows I have watched in that it throws a lot of religious stuff into it. As you can imagine, in the "hollywood" world of this show most of the characters are not your religious types. In fact, Matthew Perry's character is distinctly NOT a Christian and in fact on a few occasions slams Christianity pretty hard. However, his love interest and star of the fictional comedy show is a devout Christian woman who is proud of her love of Christ and speaks openly about Him and her faith on many occasions. Without her character, honestly, I probably would have been a little turned off. But with her, there is a nice balance to the non-Christian views.
I have only watched the first 6 episodes so far...but I can guarantee that the others will be at the top of my que on Netflix!
Obviously, this is not a deep thinking show like my all time favorite "Lost" - but it is simple, funny and cute, and has some fun insight into the makings of live television shows, and I LOVE that! I guess since I can't do it...I will have to just live vicariously through shows like this to see what it would be like if I had gone to Hollywood and "made it!"
Rent it sometime if you ever want to just relax and watch something easy going. To bad it didn't make it past 22 episodes! I don't get that either, it even got a 8.6 out of 10 stars on IMDB - so people must have liked it.
Edit: Cool little trivia that I just ran across on IMDB
"The character of Harriet Hayes is loosely modeled after creator Aaron Sorkin's former girlfriend, Kristin Chenoweth."
For those who don't know, Kristin Chenoweth was the original Glinda in Wicked on Broadway and has been on several television shows as well including West Wing which was also created by Aaron Sorkin. She is also a Christian recording artist with at least one CD - maybe more?
